Narbik’s Bootcamp - Day 5 (QoS etc)
We started the day with 3550/60 per-port per-vlan QoS and then moved on to mls qos. Narbik talked about Policers, IP Prec, DSCP values and went in detail to show us how IP Prec and DSCP values are derived. He went over Priority Queueing, Custom Queueing and explained the issues with those. According to him, the problem with PQ was that if you had more traffic in the queue higher than yours, then your queue will always starve. Read more
Cisco Switched Digital Video Platform Selected by Rogers Cable
Cisco today announced that Rogers Cable Communications Inc, Canada’s largest cable television operator, has selected the Cisco® Switched Digital Video (SDV) system for its Ontario customers. Cisco’s SDV platform is an integrated, cost-effective, and highly scalable solution.
With the accelerating rollout of advanced, bandwidth-hungry digital services, such as high-definition television (HDTV) and video-on-demand (VoD), Cisco’s SDV system helps operators more efficiently utilize bandwidth, while priming their site operations for next-generation advanced services and new revenue-generating opportunities.
“As cable operators continue to evolve from service providers to ‘experience providers,’ we’re evolving our network solutions so they may better utilize the hybrid fiber-coaxial spectrum,” said Greg Hardy, vice president of Business Development for Cisco’s Service Provider Video Technology Group. “Our scalable SDV solution helps enable service providers to strategically expand their network and service offerings for years to come.” Read more
:COM Selects Cisco to Enable Delivery of Ultra-High Speed Broadband
Cisco announced today that Japan’s Jupiter Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (J:COM) has started receiving shipments of the Cisco® DPC3000 DOCSIS 3.0 Channel Bonded Cable Modem for use in its J:COM NET Ultra 160M Course broadband service, which offers download speeds of up to 160 Mbps. The Cisco DPC3000 was one of the first modems to be awarded CableLabs® Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS®) 3.0 certification.
By incorporating four bonded channels for both the downstream and upstream data, the Cisco DPC3000 can deliver downstream data rates in excess of 160 Mbps and upstream data rates up to 120 Mbps. This dramatic increase in speed will help take consumers to a new level of performance with faster access to on-demand, feature-rich entertainment and communications, while enabling service providers to optimize existing bandwidth. Comcast & Cisco Announce Successful Live Network Demonstration
Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSK, CMCSA), the nation’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today announced it has successfully completed a 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) technology test over its existing backbone infrastructure between Philadelphia and McLean, VA using the industry’s first 100GE router interface developed for the Cisco CRS-1 routing system. This demonstration is another example of Comcast’s commitment to technology that supports the rapid growth of new applications and services.
The Cisco CRS-1 100GE interface uses Comcast’s existing optical infrastructure to enable transmission of 100GE over DWDM fiber optic networks. Utilizing this type of technology will enable companies, like Comcast, to increase bandwidth per wavelength by a factor of 10 over the initial deployed capability. It also creates efficiencies by simplifying routing and operations through the use of statistically multiplexed 100GE links, in comparison to carrying the same amount of traffic split over more commonly used 10GE links. CCIE Service Provider Lab Changes Announced
I was at Narbik’s bootcamp but reading through IE’s blog, looks like there are a few changes to CCIE Service Provider track. IPV6 is finally part of the SP track but we don’t know exactly how much of it will be covered. IOS-XR may be coming to the track in near future in form of GSR routers.
