EIGRP unequal cost load balancing

EIGRP unequal-cost load balancing is one of those topics that we all try to run away from. EIGRP will not perform unequal cost load balancing by default and we have to use the variance command to do so. While working through IE’s vol 2 workbook, I came across a real nice lab that tested unequal cost load balancing. So I decided why not write a brief tutorial that might help others also.

EIGRP Finished….

Ok so I am satisfied with my progress so far as I have covered Switching, Frame-relay, RIPv2 and now EIGRP. I was scheduled to spend whole week on RIPv2 and EIGRP but I was able to finish them up earlier. Let’s go over the notes from my EIGRP Studies.

Hello Interval & Hold Time (dead interval)

Routing devices periodically send hello packets to each other to dynamically learn of other routers on their directly attached networks. This information is used to discover neighbors and to learn when neighbors become unreachable or inoperative. By default, hello packets are sent every 5 seconds. The exception is on low-speed, nonbroadcast multiaccess (NBMA) media, where the default hello interval is 60 seconds. Low speed is considered to be a rate of T1 or slower, as specified with the bandwidth interface configuration command. Read more

Narbik’s Bootcamp - Day 2

I was not able to finish all the Frame-relay labs last night so I am already behind. I think I will dedicate my Saturday & Sunday for all the leftovers. Today we covered OSPF and EIGRP with 40% lecture and 60% hands-on labs. Narbik started off with OSPF lecture and covered every single thing about OSPF you ever wanted to know. As always the starting point was that OSPF is a linkstate protocol and I thought to myself “Damn I already know that, is that why I am here?” but by the time he was done - I was like WOW! I didn’t know all this about OSPF. So we had the lecture from 9am - 3pm with a lunch break in between. At 3pm we started cranking the OSPF labs until 7pm. I was not able to finish all the labs so got some more leftovers for the weekend. I have tons of notes from the lecture that I will try to post here later on.

“Lab 6 - EIGRP Stub” covers EIGRP stub routing with all the options. This was a nice lab to finish off the night with. It requires that we configure all the different options one step at a time and then answer the different questions on what we see in the routing tables.

“Lab 5 - EIGRP authentication and advanced configuration” requires that we configure authentication for routes and also log difference eigrp logging messages. I will refer the documentation for this. That information is pretty simple and to the point. Read more

“Lab 4 - EIGRP Load Balancing” mostly covers the variance command. Variance command allows us to perform unequal cost load balancing if the feasibility condition is met. Only paths that are feasible can be used for load balancing and included in the routing table. The AD must be lower than the FD.

“Lab 3 - EIGRP Summarization & Advanced Summarization” covers the summarization concept. It will also require that you use the leak-map option.  Read more

“Lab 2 - EIGRP Metric” wants us to play around with the metric values. Task 1 requires us to set up RIPv2 on R1 and advertise the directly connected networks. Piece of cake!

“Lab 1 - Configuring EIGRP and adjusting timers” - Task 1 requires that I configure EIGRP on four routers and advertise their directly connected networks. I am actually liking this format where you configure the basic routing protocol over and over again until you are really good with it. Read more
